The state capital of Sabah is Kota Kinabalu. It is a relatively new town as most of its original buildings were destroyed during World War II. Only the north-eastern corner of the town remained and is known as 'Old KK' among the locals today. The post-war reconstruction has resulted in Kota Kinabalu becoming a hodgepodge of new and old buildings. Previously known as Jesselton, Kota Kinabalu is a sprawling, relaxed township of more than 13,000 inhabitants. There is an interesting blend of European, Malay and Chinese shop houses, traditional market places set amongst several high-rise buildings and new shopping areas.
The town is also referred to as 'Singgah Mata' (where the eye lingers) and its still as appealing as it was to the mariners of old. Kota Kinabalu has some beautiful views of perpetual blue skies, a coral-studded sea with lovely sunsets and misty mountains in the distance. |
KINABALU NATIONAL PARK & MOUNT KINABALU
The Kinabalu National Park covers a staggeromg area pf 754 sq. km, established as a state park in 1954, this botanical paradise is blessed with an antonishing variety of flora and fauna that renages over 4 climate zones, from the rich lowland dipterocarp forett through the montane oak, rhododendron and coniferous forest to the pine meadow plants. It is Malaysia's first World Heritage disignated by UNESCO in December 2000 for its outstanding universal values and role as one of the world's most important biological sites. The focal point of the park. of course is the majestic Mount Kinabalu, this magnificent granite massif stands at 4095.2 m (13,435 ft) tall and it's South East Asia highest peak. Travellers descend upon Sabah to seek adventures of the ecological wonders as they ascend and conquer the breathtaking heights of Mount Kinabalu, while non-climber an indulge in the coolness and serene surrounding of this nature retreat.
